Explore the importance of urban design in your neighbourhood on this course, and use creative design tools to develop and move ideas forward.

What is a Neighbourhoods by Design course?

Neighbourhoods by Design is a two-day hands-on design course for community groups and organisations working on a project to improve their whole neighbourhood. The course is delivered by an experienced urban designer and is an opportunity for you to do creative, practical, and hands-on work on your project to regenerate or develop a neighbourhood.

This practical course will help you to understand the principles of good design of human settlements in both urban and rural settings and how these principles can be used to improve the planning and re-design of your neighbourhood.

Who is it for?

Neighbourhoods by Design is for community groups and organisations at the early stages of a physical regeneration project of a neighbourhood. You may be leading the project or be part of a community stakeholder group working with a local authority, social housing provider, developer or cooperative.

Up to 20 people (from up to 5 different groups) may attend each course, providing a unique opportunity for you to explore and share design ideas with others in an informal and neutral space.

Members of community groups and organisations are eligible for bursaries on our scheduled courses and subsidised rates on our commissioned courses. If you are not sure whether your group falls into these categories, then contact us via email.

What happens on a Neighbourhoods by Design course?

You will have the opportunity to explore the importance of good design on the success and quality of life of neighbourhoods. Through workshop activities you will gain a better understanding of how urban design can turn places around and develop a plan to work on your neighbourhood.

Over the course of two days, you will work alongside members of your group to:

  • Explore what urban design means
  • Discuss what works and what doesn’t in your area
  • Go on a field trip to explore urban design in action
  • Look at best practice examples from around the UK and Europe
  • Gain hands-on experience and put design into action
  • Develop an action plan for improving your neighbourhood
