Community led design: what is it and does it work?
About the debate
The term ‘community led design’ means different things to different people but what does it really mean in practice? And does it lead to high quality places and spaces that are socially, economically and environmentally sustainable?
This debate will explore and challenge the mixed perceptions of community led design and consider the value and impact of its practice in the UK today. We will bring together panellists and audience members from the community, design, local government and development sector to talk about:
- their experience of community led design projects
- what they see as the qualities and outcomes of community led design
- whether they think the current social, political and economic climate supports or hinders community led design
- how community led design affects / is relevant to them and their sector
- what they and their sector can do to support and be supported by community led design
The debate will begin with brief presentations from panellists, followed by an open discussion with members of the audience. The debate will be chaired by Sophia de Sousa, Chief Executive, The Glass-House Community Led Design and is being delivered in partnership with Northern Architecture.
Speakers
David Stewart OBE - Chair, The Allendale Rural Community Housing Group
Phil Jones - Strategic Planning Manager, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council
Carinna Gebhard - Architect, _space group
Nigel Brewer - Project Director, Places for People
