Study Tours

What are Study Tours?

Study Tours are themed one-day tours where we visit a range of community led projects to give you inspiration for your own buildings, spaces, homes or neighbourhood. You will gain valuable information and advice from groups and design professionals who have undertaken a similar process.

Who are they for?

  • Community groups (1-3 representatives) who are involved in the early stages of a local regeneration project and would like to learn more about design. The tours will help you to develop design ideas for your project, and see and hear what works and what doesn’t.
  • Regeneration professionals - These tours can help you discover new ways of working more creatively and equally with the local community on a built environment project. Sometimes professionals come along on their own to learn more about community led design and take this back to share with their colleagues. Other professionals have attended with a community group they are working with and found this a useful and enjoyable way to share thoughts and ideas about their project.

What happens?

The format of the day depends on the kind and scale of project we are visiting but at each site we will be guided by a host who will tell us the story of the project. There's no better way to pick up tips on how to involve the wider community and overcome challenges in the design process than by hearing first hand from those who have already done it! The tours are also a great way to make contacts and share experience and ideas with other groups who are starting similar projects.

Glass-House Study Tours aim to help groups move their projects forward and to provide inspiration. From the feedback we receive we know that groups find the visits incredibly valuable and come away with design ideas, a broader perspective of the community led design process and a sense of enthusiasm and excitement for the future of their projects.

How do I attend?

Please see our Training and Events Calendar for full details on all of our upcoming Study Tours and to apply to come along.

Study Tours are free for members of community groups.  For professionals there is a fee of £50.

How do we get our own Study Tour?

There are various Study Tours which we can offer but we don't currently have programmed. As well as the currently programmed buildings, spaces, homes and neighbourhoods tours we can offer play, eco buildings and eco homes tours.

The Glass-House can also deliver versions of these Study Tours for a single group. We can work with you to develop a tailor-made tour and identify a number of sites which relate directly to your project and its context. You can read more about this kind of support on our Workshops page, but if you are interested, please get in touch with Hannah Gibbs to discuss your requirements: hannah@theglasshouse.org.uk, 020 7490 4583
