Our history
The Glass-House began in 1999, when The Glass-House Trust commissioned an action research project under a joint tender by The Architecture Foundation and the National Communities Resource Centre (NCRC). The aim of the project was to explore the role of the built environment in our quality of life, and to help tenants and residents groups play a more active role in changes to their housing estates and neighbourhoods. In 2001 we provided our first free Glass-House Design Training support to community groups at Trafford Hall, home of NCRC.
In April 2006, The Glass-House Community Led Design launched as an independent national charity. Since then, we have continued to work with community groups and regeneration professionals who are passionate about the built environment and would like to make a positive difference to where they live.
Over the last decade, we have developed new ways to support to community organisations working on projects to create or improve buildings, open spaces, homes and neighbourhoods.
We have also worked to support design and regeneration professionals, promoting awareness of the importance of community led design, and giving them tools to work more effectively and collaboratively with local people, groups and organisations.
