Portobello connects: collaborative placemaking on the Edinburgh shoreline

At this event, we’ll be bringing together local people and organisations to explore the power of collaboration in shaping places. We’ll look at what’s happening in Portobello  and the surrounding shoreline communities to identify the provision of facilities, activities and services. We’ll go on to explore the potential to further connect people, projects and assets and to develop shared sense of place along Edinburgh’s shoreline communities through a collaborative approach to placemaking.

Drop-in event | 3:15 – 6pm

During this afternoon drop-in session, you are invited to share your views on what is already happening and what is missing in the area. Help us create a visual map of local activities, services, and initiatives in Portobello and its neighbouring communities. Share ideas for new projects and connect local energy and resources in Portobello and the wider area.

Tell us about how local actions link to the physical qualities of the Edinburgh shoreline, and the ways they come together to make a great place to live, work and play.

Community co-design & placemaking workshop outline | 6-9pm

Our evening cross-pollination workshop is an active space where we will focus on making connections to enhance what is already happening and to activate new initiatives in local places and spaces.

We’ll round up the evening with a discussion about the potential for this collaborative approach to mobilise joint action to shape our places, as well as how this can enrich more traditional approaches to development and regeneration on the Edinburgh shoreline, and beyond. A light buffet dinner will be served.

All are welcome to this Glass-House event designed to bring different interests and sectors together in a safe and neutral space to explore the potential for collaborative placemaking. The event is free to attend, but spaces are limited. To secure your place please register here. If you have any special requirements to help you fully participate in this event, please contact us at info@theglasshouse.org.uk

About the series

Community-led and community-engaged design are increasingly part of the narrative of development and regeneration, but what does this really mean in practice for those involved? How can we navigate the language and various approaches of people-centred design and ensure that these processes enable agency for local people? We Design events are active spaces, in which participants work together to develop ideas, proposals and prototypes which challenge their own and other people’s perceptions of design and placemaking.
